Other Claims Of Election Fraud, Yet No One Cares

Posters of Aziz

In Sunday's elections in Mauritania, President Mohammad Ould Abdel Aziz declared victory in the presidential election. Aziz arised to power during a bloodless military coup on August 6, 2008 replacing President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi the first democratically elected president. The former Bush Administration was not too fond of Aziz's actions and former Secretary Rice claimed, "We oppose any attempts by military elements to change government through extra-constitutional means. We call upon the military to release President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi ... and to restore the legitimate, constitutional, democratically elected government immediately." Since its independence in 1960, the West African nation has had several coups.

One of the main candidates Masoud Ould Boulkheir has called the election a fraud. Aziz announced, "I am president of all Mauritanians." According to Mauritania Information Agency, a state-run media outlet, Aziz won by 52.5 percent and was ahead of the other nine presidential candidates, there has been no other information available yet.

I know what some of you are thinking - you have never heard of this country! However, many of you did not even know what Iran was until months before. Some of you even got it confused with Iraq, though I think 9-11 did educate a majority about the Middle East. It seems almost hypocritical of the international community to not make any questions towards these allegations. Since it is not a country of western interests, Mauritania's elections do not matter to the world. A small population (3 million) is no excuse for this matter, as if it had happened in Israel (With a population of about 7.4 million) the entire world would be on top of it. This has not even made major headline news! I find that if people are willing to care about Iran, they should care just as much about Mauritania. If Aziz came in during a coup, it would seem like no surprise that he would try to meddle with the election results. I have not heard much about him, so I have no idea what he is like.

What do you make of the elections?

I think it reaffirms my belief that all World Governments to a certain extent are corrupt. They have been since human beings established governments. However people are becoming more educated and wiser to how things are "supposed to work" and have begun to see better when things are awry. The people of the world think they have advanced leaps and bounds yet they still have ways to go in terms of getting past their ignorance.

I would definitely have to agree with you on the corrupt issue. It would be merely impossible for one not to be, if they were not they'd be considered a eutopian government - which do not exist. I also must say people are wising up and I think it has to do with the easy access to information via the internet and similiar. It's just really unfortunate that this is a common thing occuring. Thanks for the comment, as always! :D
